World?

Spent a long time at the weekend trying to get the BBC World live stream to work. It wasn't falling for any of my proxy trickery. Any ideas?

UPDATE #1:
Big thanks to PK_1 for his help. He found out that Hotspot Shield didn't work, but he was able to view BBC World on Livestation using the proxy http://2bypass.info/.
For some strange reason it didn't work for me :-(

The Weather Show - Summer 2010

It's the August Bank Holiday weekend - so we're due another edition of The Weather Show.

According to Sky, it's going out on the BBC News Channel on Saturday at 02:30, on Sunday at 02:30 and 21:30 and on Monday at 03:30 and 14:30.

If it wasn't for Mike's continued dedicated uploading, I would have been completely oblivious to Dan's Wednesday broadcasts. Thanks again, Mike!

I shall place the blame on the fact that the Today's Broadcasting Team page hasn't been updated in a week.

In fact, it's been some time now since the link to the TBT was removed from the 'About BBC Weather' section of the BBC Weather website (so you can only view it if you know the URL or link to it directly) yet, surprisingly, they've continued to update it - until now.
It's rather useful, so I'm hoping this doesn't spell the end of the TBT.

A quick poke about on the EPG reveals the broadcast times for this weekend's Weather Show (with Dan doing the world weather news) on the BBC News Channel:
Saturday at 05:30 and 14:30.
Sunday at 03:30, 10:30 and 14:30.

As you might have read in the comments, Weatherwatcher posted a link to a BBC Weather page about the next edition of The Weather Show - with (wait for it...) the promise of Dan-content. Yay!

Peter Gibbs will look at the history of weather modification while Dan Corbett will go behind some of the recent meteorological news from around the globe.

The programme will be broadcast over the weekend of the 24th and 25th October, times yet to be confirmed.

In other news (off-topic, but perhaps relevant to your interests), there is now a Tomasz Schafernaker fan blog; The Schaf.

And, if you haven't seen Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs yet, I can highly recommend seeing it in 3D. I mean, come on - weather PLUS comedy, it's a killer combination.

TBT

It's been a week now since the Today's Broadcasting Team page was last updated. I'm wondering whether the TBT has been a casualty of the BBC Weather site redesign, as there's no sign of it on the currently available beta version.

There's no doubt that blogging will be more difficult without the TBT. Without it I have no way of knowing when Dan's going to be on and (gasp) forecasts might be missed! Unthinkable!

I was also having trouble finding a link to the World forecast on the new site, and was concerned that this would mean being deprived of hearing Dan say 'Buenos Aires'.
However, I tried typing in that city's name in the sidebar - and up came a video forecast just for South America! Type in New York and get a forecast for North America. Sydney, Tokyo, Cairo, Berlin, Dubai; each bring up a different 'regional' world forecast. Not one World forecast - but seven!

So, I foolishly believed the TBT when it said Dan wasn't on today.
Turns out, he was.

There's not much to report in the way of Dan-isms. I missed him on BBCi and also on BBC One (where, if you believe what you read, he warned us that we'll be in for 'whooosh' tonight).

Also, there's no sign of Dan in this week's Radio Times.

Dan was on 5Live this morning. Of course, this being the weekend, I wasn't awake to hear any of it live, so attempted to listen on the iPlayer. However, there seems to be something wrong with the iPlayer; playback is extremely slow on every 5Live programme I try to listen to. You know, slowed-down, deep voice kind of slow.

If it hadn't been for the presenter on Morning Reports announcing, 'Daniel Corbett joins me from the Weather Centre', (53m in) and his ever-reassuring sign off (just before 59m in) I wouldn't have known it was Dan. It's surprisingly difficult to understand what he's saying at half-speed.

No sign of him in this week's Radio Times, though. Perhaps he's on 5Live [shudder].

Hidden away in yesterday's post was the news that there's no sign of Dan in the Radio Times (to 19th December). I had a quick peek in the main Christmas issue (to 2nd January) this evening and saw no mention of him there either, but there were several days (including Christmas Eve / Day and New Year's Eve) where the forecaster was not named at all.

OK people, don't faint; Angela says Dan IS mentioned in next week's Radio Times:

According to next week's RT, Dan is on the 10 o'clock news, on Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th October.

And, after his comment to Vernon last Saturday, I'm led to believe Dan might be on that same Breakfast/early shift again this weekend.

Think of it like this; you put two blokes next to each other, one's this big massive body builder, that's the one on one side, the other one is just this puny-looking fellow - which one would you rather get into a fight with?

If you have the kite tomorrow, you'll probably have it in your hand and, all of a sudden, it'll go wfff, it'll be gone.

At the end there was a bizarre conversation about Christmas. It seems we'll find out what that was all about next week*. I'm setting the Sky+ now.

Angela announced on the Yahoo! group that, if there is no mention of Dan in the RT from now on, she won't post a message.

There was no message, so I assume he's not mentioned in this week's issue.

A couple of off-topic news items; it seems the BBC Weather site is to receive a make-over soon - and the next edition of The Weather Show is to be broadcast on BBC News (the weekend of 18th and 19th October):

Angela says there's still no mention of Dan in next week's Radio Times. Gah!

To keep you occupied in his absence, I shall point you in the direction of A Cloudy Language, 'an occasional series celebrating the verbal inventiveness of our nation’s weather forecasters'.

There's a small selection of choice quotes and, surprisingly, Phil Avery has as many mentions as Dan.

However, they've not really picked the best Dan-isms Mr. Corbett has to offer, but then the authors probably don't follow the forecasts as obsessively enthusiastically as I do.

Checking my recordings this evening, Dan was on BBC Four at the end of World News Today. Perhaps he was also on BBCi, I don't know - I was too busy to look.

I really miss not knowing who is on the afternoon / evening shift. That was a bad move, Radio Times [shakes fist at whoever was responsible].

Unless my eyes deceive me (and, quite frankly, I'm long overdue an eye test) there's only one mention of Dan in next week's issue of the Radio Times; after the early evening news (6.30-ish, IIRC) on Sunday 10th August.

Don't faint; they've only gone and fixed the TBT!

It now shows the proper channel names and describes the shifts more accurately*, hopefully fixing the glitch with the two overnight shifts.
Blimey.

Perhaps they've realised people actually do look at it.

* EDIT: on closer inspection, I'm not sure this is true for every shift. Oh well, it'll only take 'em another three years to notice.

Looking through next week's Radio Times I only saw Dan's name once - for the weather after BBC News at Ten on Monday 23rd June. However, the forecaster name was missing, even on the late evening news, for several days in that week's issue.

Wimbledon soon; wonder if Dan's down to do some of the forecasts from there as in previous years?

My current workload is absolutely mind-boggling; there may be days in the next fortnight in which I won't have the time to post. In this case I'll either not blog at all or blog a few days later.
Having said that, blogging might be the perfect stress-relieving work-break activity, so you never can tell.

So, I had my weekly-sneaky-peek in the Radio Times yesterday and the only day I saw Dan's name was next to the early(ish) evening news on Sunday. The news is on just after 7pm this Sunday, so if the weather's on after the regional news at 7.20 then it might be nearer 7.25 / 7.30 before we (possibly) see Dan.
As always, keep an eye on the ever-useless TBT.

A phrase you will not often hear pass my lips but, hooray for the football; it's the reason the early evening news gets shunted to 7pm a few days next week and, possibly because of this, the Radio Times has added two all-important extra words to the News programme details - the weather presenter name. Yes, it's Dan.

It says Dan's on next Monday and Tuesday (9th and 10th June) - I am assuming that this is the afternoon / evening slot.

Angela has delivered some alarming news over on the Yahoo! group;

The format seems to have changed in the RT; next week it doesn't say who is on afternoon/evenings at all, just the 10 o'clock news shift. Don't know if it's permanent or not. From next week for several weeks Kirsty will be checking, as I am going abroad for 3 months.

Firstly, does this mean we're supposed to rely on the wonky old TBT as our sole source of information about when Dan's going to be on?
And secondly, will I remember to check the RT?

The Weather Show

I meant to post this the other week when I first noticed the page had changed; the next edition of The Weather Show is coming next weekend.

From the BBC Weather Show page:

Having parachuted safely down from the Forth Bridge, the Weather Show has decided to up its insurance premiums and take the show elsewhere on the road.

Rather than accepting the offer of supporting Jay-Z and Shakin' Stevens at Glastonbury, the Spring Bank Holiday edition of the programme will be following its own agenda in some weather beaten location.

Erm, Glastonbury is at the end of June, isn't it? Only a month out...

The programme is the BBC News Channel's look at the meteorological world around us and seeks to educate, inform and entertain.

Carol Kirkwood will once again leave the relative safety of the Blue Peter garden and take you on a magical mystery tour of meteorological mayhem, bringing you weather news from around the world and exploring just how and why, the weather impacts our lives.

The Weather Men will also be resuming regular duties and have taken off their coats, put on their shorts and applied plenty of sun cream to announce the arrival of summer. And if that image disturbs you too much, you are not alone and we may just ask them to cover up.

Last but not least there will be the usual helping of gadgets for those weather-techies amongst you, making it possibly our best show ever! Notice the word 'possibly' and assume that to be the same kind of 'possible' that is in the sentence 'possible sunny spells'.

So if you fancy getting away from the usual old television and learning more about the weather, do join us on the BBC News Channel (that's the one that used to be News 24) over the Spring Bank holiday weekend.

BBC News 'Channel', gah! Did you see me roll my eyes at the very mention of it? Yes, I'm still not over the name change.

A quick look on the Radio Times website suggests that the broadcast times on BBC News are Sunday 25th May at 11:30 and Monday 26th May at 02:30 and 10:30.
The RT has the programme description as,

'It's summer in the city, and as we get more sunshine the quality of the air decreases, we look at how this happens. Plus your weather photographs and the usual array of weather gadgets and weather news.'

Lately, the Dan-content of this programme has been alarmingly low, so bear that in mind if he's the only reason you'll watch.

Looks like we're in for a busy week next week; Angela tells us on the Yahoo! group that, according to the Radio Times, Dan's on afternoon and evenings Sunday 18th, Monday 19th, Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd May.

Had a lovely time up in Scotland, it certainly blew away the cobwebs! Didn't get as much snow up there as I would have had if I'd stayed at home; even this morning there was the remains of a snowman in next-door's garden.

I've back-dated the posts from the days I was away - and normal service resumes!

I had a quick peep in the Radio Times on my way home from work this evening (not sure if Angela's off on holiday yet or not) and was surprised to see no mention of Dan at all, not on the Six or Ten O'Clock News shifts for next week.
